“Blue Crush” About To Make a Splash With a TV Series Reboot

Remember 2002 when Blue Crush hit the big screen? It became one the most famous surf movie ever and definitely participated in the growth of the sport. Many girls picked up surfing after seeing Kate Bosworth -or rather her stunt double Rochelle Ballard- charge the intimidating Hawaiian’s waves without even losing her bikini. Just because she was a bad-ass chick (and because she was a bad-ass chick, she also got to get the boy).

Well, get excited girls! NBC is preparing to make a splash with a reboot of Blue Crush. The network is developing a drama series based on the surf movie. The pitch? Following a near-death accident, a surfer girl from Hawaii’s North Shore aims to revive her career and unite the local community.

A boost for women’s surfing

This reboot appears like an amazing opportunity to bring women’s surfing to its next stage. And knowing how both surfing and special effects have improved in the past 15 years, we can’t wait to see the final result. But the project is still in its early stages and no release date has been announced.

Of course, we also wonder who the casting director might recruit among the pro surfers. Keala Kennely, Layne Beachley, Megan Abubo, Coco Ho (as young Anne Marie, the main character) and of course Rochelle Ballard all made an appearance in the original version of the film. More recently, it’s Isabella Nichols who got a taste of Hollywood. The 2016 World Junior Champion played Blake Lively’s role for the surfing scenes in the movie The Shallows.

Whoever they pick, no doubt that this Blue Crush reboot will give another huge push to women’s surfing. And that’s all that matters. So… Who runs the world?
